The Lobster House - Tavernier, Florida
Project Overview
A Memorable Build:
The Lobster House stands out as one of the most enjoyable projects we’ve tackled. Aptly named by its owner after the tradition of catching lobsters in the Florida Keys, this project beautifully blends functionality, luxury, and the charm of island living.
Original Concept
The project began with the owner’s desire for a pool that highlighted the stunning waterway leading to the Gulf of Mexico. After brainstorming and site visits, the pool was strategically placed on the far side of the property, utilizing unused space for spectacular water views and maximizing the property’s potential.
Exterior Features
- Decking and Pool: A large rectangular saltwater pool surrounded by artistic pavers.
- Landscaping: Commercial-grade artificial turf, a putting green, and a summer kitchen on the dock.
- Privacy and Accessibility: A custom Lobster gate for the driveway, new fencing for privacy and safety, and a dog- and child-friendly perimeter.
Design Flow
The pool area was raised to incorporate artificial turf and leveled sitting spaces, ensuring a smooth, flip-flop-friendly flow that embraced the laid-back Keys lifestyle.
Interior Highlights
Bathrooms:
Completely redesigned with vacation guests in mind, featuring smaller penny tiles for added traction and safety. Bathrooms were renovated in phases to maximize rental income during the project.
Kitchens:
- The main kitchen was upgraded with new cabinets, appliances, and a large slab island seating six.
- The downstairs kitchen received butcher block counters, new cabinets, and updated lighting.
Home Automation:
The property’s dual-purpose as a vacation rental inspired advanced home automation:
- Keyless access for guests and service teams.
- Remote control of lighting, cameras, and alarms.
- Energy-saving controls to reduce utility costs, including pre-set themes for guest arrivals.
Upgraded Systems
Electrical:
- Underground service for hurricane resistance.
- A 300-amp upgrade to power the heat pump, enabling the pool to double as a hot tub.
- Recessed LED lighting for energy efficiency and a modern look.
Plumbing:
- Replaced old lines with CPVC for long-term durability.
- Upgraded valves and diverters for ease of use and maintenance-free performance.
The Lobster House project reflects our commitment to creating spaces that are both functional and luxurious, capturing the essence of the Florida Keys lifestyle while ensuring durability, energy efficiency, and modern convenience.
